The symptom: keys drop only in games

A keyboard that types documents flawlessly starts eating inputs the moment you hold diagonal movement, jump, and a skill key together. That's usually not a fault — you've hit the keyboard's simultaneous-input limit, its rollover. Reproduce your exact in-game combination in our keyboard test: any key that fails to light up on the virtual keyboard is the one being blocked in that combination.

The max simultaneous input (NKRO) counter shows your ceiling too. Add fingers one at a time; where the counter stops climbing is your keyboard's effective rollover. Office membrane boards often stop at 2–3 keys, while gaming keyboards manage 6 or more — up to unlimited (N-key).

The mechanism: key matrices and ghosting

Keyboards don't wire every key individually; they use a row-by-column matrix. Pressing a key connects one row to one column, and the controller reads the intersection. Press three keys that share rows and columns, though, and a fourth, unpressed intersection can appear pressed — a phantom input. That's ghosting.

To prevent phantom keystrokes, manufacturers suppress suspicious combinations instead (anti-jamming) — which is why users experience ghosting not as extra keys but as dropped ones. Adding a diode per key blocks the current backflow that causes it, eliminating the problem by design: that's how NKRO (n-key rollover) keyboards work.

Is 6KRO enough? A realistic standard

The standard USB keyboard protocol reports six keys plus modifiers (Ctrl, Shift, Alt) at once — 6KRO. Ordinary games rarely need more than six simultaneous keys including modifiers, so a 6KRO gaming keyboard leaves most players wanting nothing. Rhythm games and genres with dense chorded input are where true NKRO pays off.

What matters more than the spec label is measurement. Some boards labeled 6KRO block certain combinations earlier — especially clusters around WASD — depending on matrix layout, and some NKRO boards silently fall back to 6KRO in wireless or compatibility modes. Testing your actual gaming combinations is the only verification that counts.

Free workarounds you can use today

You often don't need a new keyboard. Once you've identified the blocked combination, rebind the game: moving a skill from QER to ZXC, for example, breaks the shared row/column relationship and frequently restores full simultaneous input. The matrix conflicts are position-dependent, so distance helps.

Some wireless keyboards run lower rollover than the same board wired, so plug in for serious sessions.
