Confirm drift in one minute
If your character wanders on its own or the camera slowly pans with your hands off the controller, it's time to check for stick drift. Connect the pad to our gamepad test, take your hands completely off, and watch the stick circles — if the dot sits outside the dashed dead-zone ring on its own, drift is confirmed. A dot that always rests in the same direction suggests wear; readings that jump around suggest contamination.
Check the numbers too. A resting axis value persistently beyond ±0.08 (our default dead zone) will punch through most games' default dead zones as well. Tiny values around 0.03–0.05 are within normal analog tolerance — if you don't feel it in games, it needs no action.
The cause: potentiometer wear and contamination
Most sticks use potentiometers: a metal wiper scrapes across a resistive track to read position, and that scraping makes the mechanism a consumable. The track physically wears away until the center reading shifts — that's wear drift, and it arrives faster with aggressive play.
The second cause is contamination: dust, skin oils, and drink residue slipping through the stick gap onto the track make readings jump erratically. Contamination can be cleaned; wear is physical damage and cleaning won't undo it. Which type you have sets your expectations for the fixes below.
Stopgaps: dead-zone tuning and cleaning
The fastest mitigation is enlarging the dead zone — in Steam's controller settings, your console's controller options, or in-game. Set it just above your drift value and the symptom disappears. The trade-offs: you sacrifice fine-aim precision, and because drift is progressive you'll keep having to raise the value.
For contamination, cleaning can genuinely work. Power off, tilt the stick to one side to open the gap, apply a small amount of electronics contact cleaner, and rotate the stick through full circles a few dozen times. Once dry, recheck on our test page — if the resting value is back inside the dead zone, you've bought real time. If it improves then relapses within days, wear is also present; prepare for the next step.
The cure: warranty, module swap, or Hall-effect
In-warranty drift is repaired or replaced free by most manufacturers. A screenshot of our test showing the resting stick value makes effortless evidence. Support will often ask you to update the controller firmware and run the console's stick calibration first — doing both before you file speeds the whole process up.
Out of warranty: if you can solder, replacement potentiometer modules cost a few dollars and are the standard fix; some newer pads even take drop-in stick modules with no soldering. And if you're tired of meeting this failure repeatedly, consider a controller with Hall-effect (magnetic) sticks — with no physical contact to wear down, they are effectively drift-proof by design, and the third-party market now offers plenty of options.
